COVID-19 Updates & Changes

A resource page to learn how Project Legacy is navigating COVID-19 among our programs and services, updated regularly with the most up-to-date service information.

Updated July 3, 2020

Like many organizations, Project Legacy is constantly reevaluating and responding to the latest science around the coronavirus and best practices for interacting with youth, volunteers and staff. Please read below for recent changes to Project Legacy programs and volunteer activities:

Program Updates

At this time, we have begun meeting outside with our youth groups, while wearing masks, practicing social distancing and avoiding physical contact.

We are providing Lyft rides to youth who do not have access to transportation.

We continue to hold Zoom meetings and Healing Circles, though we recognize that the lack of in-person meetings has been difficult for our young people. For this reason, we will be resuming our Healing Circles and some group activities, using safety precautions to stop the spread of COVID-19 and to continue keeping the safety of our team and young people top-of-mind.

Our teen girls’ group will be meeting twice per week under the leadership of Alysha Carlisle, Abol Barnaba and Akoy Marial, and our young adults circle will be meeting twice per week, co-facilitated by Willie Tipton, Sophorn Khoun, Karen Edmonds and Alysha Carlisle. We will soon be starting a teen boys’ group that will be facilitated by Willie, Sophorn and Mayo Clinic medical student, Adrian Beyde (more on this program in our next newsletter).

Current Needs & Volunteer Updates

At this time, because of the risk of transmission of the virus, we are limiting in-person volunteer activities, and are focusing in-person activities to working together at the MLK garden. If you are interested in sharing this time with our youth, please let us know by emailing kedmonds@projectlegacymn.org and we will provide you with your an updated gardening schedule so you can join us.

We continue to have a need for Operation Encourage volunteers. Learn more about this important program here.

Traditionally, Project Legacy has relied on volunteers to prepare home-cooked meals for our groups, however with the new safety guidelines we can no longer do this. While this change saddens us, we continue to have a need for meals at our groups to provide nourishment to our young people. If you would like to volunteer to provide a commercially prepared meal, or a store-bought item (hotdogs or hamburgers for grilling, for example, or chips, fruit, etc), or would like to make a donation to cover the cost of a meal, we would be very grateful.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we navigate these difficult times and continue to provide support, community and healing for our young people.
