For Immediate Release: Project Legacy to Begin Serving Youth and Young Adults Who Have Experienced Sexual Exploitation

Rochester, Minn. — Project Legacy is proud to announce a program expansion to serve youth and young adults who have been sexually exploited or are survivors of sex trafficking.

For the past 13 years, Project Legacy has been working with youth of color who have grown up in generational poverty; have experienced homelessness, abuse and neglect; who carry the effects of the legacy of slavery or are refugees. Providing wraparound support, programs encompass a wide range of services from tutoring, mentorship, financial assistance and an alternative, positive peer group.

After identifying a growing need in the community, the Project Legacy staff and board of directors have decided to expand services to support young people who have experienced sexual exploitation or who are survivors of sex trafficking through similar programs offering assistance, mentorship and support.

In the few weeks since beginning this expansion, Project Legacy has already supported three women who are either survivors of sex trafficking or who have experienced sexual exploitation. From assisting them in accessing healthcare, filing taxes and pursuing education, Project Legacy will continue to take an active role through mentorship, support and encouragement as they navigate the complexities of leaving the life of sex trafficking and exploitation and begin healing from trauma.

“We are grateful to our partners and donor community for continuing to fund and support Project Legacy programs,” says Executive Director Karen Edmonds. “We know the expansion of our programs was, without a doubt, the right decision just by seeing the relief on the faces of these young women.”

About Project Legacy:

Project Legacy serves and supports youth and young adults of color who are breaking cycles of generational poverty, racism, abuse and sexual exploitation. Since 2006, we have served hundreds of youth through wraparound support including tuition assistance, mental health support and an alternative, positive peer group.

Our mission is to provide hope, connections and support to youth and young adults of color who may have experienced poverty, trauma, homelessness and sexual exploitation, or who are refugees from war-torn countries and have not had a positive support system, allowing them to heal from trauma, transform their lives, and become involved members of our community.
