Legacy Residency: Housing Program for Project Legacy Alumni & Peer Leaders
Last spring, one of our donors came to us with an idea: purchasing a home that could be used by Project Legacy to rent to our youth.
As an organization, we've been pursuing options for youth housing for two years, seeing firsthand the hurdles our young people experience establishing a rental history and moving to eventual home ownership. Needless to say, with our donor's generous offer, an exciting opportunity led to the creation of our newest program: The Legacy Residency.
The Legacy Residency is a leadership development program for program coordinators, youth development specialists and alumni, offering supportive housing during life’s transitions, the ability for participants to focus on education, financial stability and career goals, while training the next generation of Project Legacy's leaders.
This opportunity will not only provide participants with a safe, stable and affordable home, but also the opportunity to learn how to care for a home and prepare for eventual home ownership.
With the announcement of this program, we are proud to share that we will be opening two homes this fall, one in Rochester and one in North Minneapolis. In October, two young women will move into our first home in Rochester and three young women and a young man will move into our home in North Minneapolis.
They will reside in the home as they continue to work for Project Legacy, obtain their GEDs, work towards their college graduations, and launch their professional careers beyond our organization.
For our young people, the Legacy Residency represents a full circle evolution through our program: Participating in their youth, graduating as alumni, and joining us to live, work and serve the next generation of youth engaged in our supportive community.
Watch for updates as we move towards closing on the property in October and please consider partnering with us in giving as we will need to furnish the home and prepare to move in.
