Press Release: Project Legacy receives Mayo Clinic grant to help support area youth

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 25, 2022

Rochester, Minn. — Project Legacy is proud to announce a recent grant of $50,000 from Mayo Clinic to support the organization’s mission of providing hope, connections and support to youth and young adults who have not had a positive support system; allowing them to heal from trauma, transform their lives, and become involved members of our community.

This funding represents the seventh year Project Legacy has received support from Mayo Clinic, funding which was pivotal in sustaining the organization's key programs over the past several years.

“Our staff and board at Project Legacy extend our gratitude for Mayo Clinic’s continued commitment to our mission,” says Karen Edmonds, Executive Director. “This funding will continue to do what it always has - provide opportunities for youth and young adults of color to build a legacy for their lives through education, a positive support system, wraparound healing and the connection to a vibrant and loving community.”

Funding from Mayo Clinic’s 2022 contribution will support innovative partnerships through the Legacy Scholars Program, a program for first generation college students that provides wraparound support and mentorship at a pivotal time in a young person’s life. Additionally, the funding will help sustain the key operations of Project Legacy, support received alongside a base of monthly donors and grant makers who have continued to support the program’s capacity and future growth.

Both Project Legacy and Mayo Clinic are committed to education and equity in our community, and this funding partnership represents a continued commitment to the next generation of young people entering the workforce and becoming engaged citizens in Rochester and beyond.

About Project Legacy:
Project Legacy serves and supports youth and young adults of color* who are breaking cycles of generational poverty, racism, abuse and sexual exploitation or involvement in the commercial sex industry. Since 2006, we have served hundreds of youth through wraparound support including tuition assistance, mental health support and an alternative, positive peer group.

Our mission is to provide hope, connections and support to youth and young adults of color who may have experienced poverty, trauma, homelessness and sexual exploitation; or who are sex workers, refugees from war-torn countries, or any young person who has not had a positive support system; allowing them to heal from trauma, transform their lives, and become involved members of our community.
